Meditation: What are the benefits & how to start

Why meditate?

It’s clear that in todays fast paced consumer society there’s not much time left for care of yourself. This can leave us exhausted, fed up and feeling drained. Over time we can lose our sense of self and slowly begin to forget what makes each of us so special. Thus leading us to stop caring about ourselves and how we treat other people. At times like this we need to step back and take a moment, a moment away from the rat race, from the problems of the people around us and the problems we create in our own heads. This is where one of the most underused free practices (meditation) can provide us with a renewed sense of self and well-being.

  • Controls anxiety

  • Lengthens attention span

Meditation is a gradual process and requires consistency to progress. That being said you can start with small steps and commit as much time that fits in with your lifestyle. But I would recommend doing it daily even if it is for a short space of time to see results and progress. Dedicating that time to yourself is the beginning steps to showing yourself the respect you deserve.

Begin with
  • Breathing breaks

    Pause a couple times a day and practice deep breathing even for a minute or so. It’s best to do this is a quiet space where no one will bother you and you can close your eyes. (Video on how to breathe properly can be found below)

  • Guided meditation

    I have linked some guided meditations below. Try them out and see which one works for you!

  • Awareness meditation (Ideally in nature)

    On a lunch break go and sit in a park and watch any nature around you. Watch as any animals go about their day and listen to the sounds around you. This can attune your senses and leave you feeling calmer and more grounded.
